Route overview

Tourist refusals are rarely about a missing stamp. They are about doubt — doubt about the purpose of travel, the source of the money, or the applicant's intention to return. A strong visitor file removes doubt before a caseworker has to look for it.

Europe splits into three systems. The Schengen area shares one short-stay visa across twenty-nine countries. The United Kingdom runs its own Standard Visitor route. Ireland, though in the EU, sits outside Schengen and requires a separate visa.

Within Schengen, the file is lodged with the country of your main destination, or the country of first entry when nights are evenly split. The rest of the requirements are broadly shared, with national quirks in appointment systems and preferred document formats.

Eligibility requirements

  • A passport valid beyond the intended stay, with the validity margin the destination requires
  • A clear, specific travel purpose with dates that match your bookings
  • Adequate and traceable funds for the full duration of the trip
  • Confirmed accommodation and onward or return transport
  • Travel medical insurance, with Schengen requiring at least EUR 30,000 of cover
  • Demonstrable ties to your country of residence — work, study, family or property

Eligibility criteria change. Final eligibility always depends on the official rules in force on your filing date and on an individual review of your case by the deciding authority.

United Kingdom

Standard Visitor route, outside Schengen
Travel purpose
Tourism, family visits, business meetings, conferences or short training — stated precisely, since the route is intention-tested.
Itinerary
A realistic plan rather than a packed one. UK caseworkers weigh plausibility against your income and leave entitlement.
Finances
Bank statements showing regular income and a maintained balance; a sponsor's finances and relationship evidence where the trip is funded by a host.
Accommodation
Hotel bookings, or the host's address with proof of their status and accommodation.
Cover letter
Explains the purpose, funding, itinerary and the reason you will return. Business trips add an invitation from the UK company.
Return intent
Employer leave approval, ongoing study, dependants, property or business obligations at home.

Ireland

Irish short-stay visa, EU but outside Schengen
Travel purpose
Tourism or visiting family and friends. An Irish visa does not permit Schengen travel.
Itinerary
Dates matching your bookings, with any onward travel clearly separated from the Irish portion.
Finances
Six months of statements; sponsors provide statements plus a signed undertaking and relationship proof.
Accommodation
Hotel confirmations or a host invitation with the host's immigration status in Ireland.
Cover letter
Signed, addressed to the visa officer, stating purpose, funding, accommodation and departure date.
Return intent
Employment, enrolment or family ties, evidenced rather than asserted.

Confirmed bookings covering every night of the trip, with no unexplained gaps.

Sets out the route, nights per country and why the chosen consulate has jurisdiction.
Return intent
Ties at home plus a clean record under the rolling 90/180 calculation.

Germany

Schengen Type C via the German mission
Travel purpose

Structured and realistic; German consulates read itineraries closely against the funds shown.

Statements plus salary slips; for hosted visits, a formal Verpflichtungserklärung (declaration of commitment) where applicable.

In German or English, tightly matched to the itinerary. Business visits attach the German company's invitation.

Common mistakes and refusal reasons

  • A large deposit landing in the account days before submission, unexplained

  • Insurance below the required cover, or not valid area-wide
