How much German do I actually need?

It depends on the route. Au Pair files are usually filed at A1, FSJ is stronger at A2, Ausbildung employers normally expect B1, and regulated professions such as nursing expect B1 to B2. We confirm the level against the current requirement before you book an exam.

Is a blocked account always required?

Not always. Where a host organisation, employer or a formal declaration of commitment covers your maintenance, a blocked account may not be needed. Where you finance yourself, it usually is.

Can I switch routes after arriving?

Some transitions are legally possible, for example from job search under the Opportunity Card into employment. Others are not. Any change depends on the rules in force and a decision by the local foreigners authority.

How long does an appointment take to get?

Mission appointment capacity varies considerably by city and season. We plan document readiness around the appointment rather than the other way round.

Route overview

Germany runs a wider set of legal entry routes than any other country we handle. A candidate with a school leaving certificate and B1 German may qualify for Ausbildung; a graduate may qualify for the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) to search for work on the ground; a nurse may qualify for recognition-based employment.

Every route is filed through the German mission responsible for your place of residence — the embassy in New Delhi, a consulate general such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai or Kolkata, or the mission serving Nepal and Bhutan. Appointment capacity, not paperwork, is usually the longest part of the wait.

German files are judged on internal consistency. The contract, the language certificate, the financial proof and the stated intention must tell one coherent story, in German where the authority expects German.

A valid passport with sufficient remaining validity for the intended stay
A route-specific basis: host family contract, FSJ agreement, Ausbildungsvertrag, admission letter or qualifying points profile
German language evidence at the level the route requires — typically A1 for Au Pair, B1 for Ausbildung, B2 for regulated professions
Proof of financing, most often a blocked account (Sperrkonto) or a formal declaration of commitment
Health insurance valid in Germany from the date of arrival
Where relevant, recognition (Anerkennung) of a foreign qualification by the competent German authority

Common mistakes and refusal reasons

Booking a mission appointment before the contract or admission is signed
Submitting a language certificate below the level the route actually requires
A blocked account funded below the annual maintenance figure in force that year
Uncertified translations, or translations by a non-sworn translator
Inconsistent dates between the contract, insurance cover and the stated travel plan
Treating the Opportunity Card as a work permit rather than a job-search residence permit
