Route overview

Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not the EU, and long-stay decisions are made by the cantonal migration office of the canton where you will study, before the mission issues the visa. That two-stage process is why Swiss timelines run longer.

Hospitality management schools remain the most common route for our candidates, alongside cantonal universities and universities of applied sciences.

Financial expectations are high. Living costs are among the highest in Europe and cantonal authorities test funding depth carefully, including the source of funds.

Eligibility requirements

  • Unconditional admission from a recognised Swiss institution
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and Swiss living costs for the study period
  • Health insurance valid in Switzerland, or an approved exemption
  • A written commitment to leave Switzerland at the end of the studies
  • Language ability appropriate to the programme and canton

Eligibility criteria change. Final eligibility always depends on the official rules in force on your filing date and on an individual review of your case by the deciding authority.
