Ireland visas: English-medium study and short stays in the EU

Route overview

Irish study applications are made online through AVATS, then supported by a paper bundle submitted to the relevant visa office. For long-stay study, the programme must appear on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes for the immigration permission you expect to receive.

Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area, so an Irish visa does not permit Schengen travel and a Schengen visa does not permit entry to Ireland.

After arrival, students register with immigration and receive an IRP card, with permission conditions that govern part-time work and renewal.

Eligibility requirements

  • A letter of acceptance from a recognised Irish institution and, where relevant, an eligible listed programme
  • Evidence of tuition fees paid, in full or to the level the institution requires
  • Access to private medical insurance valid in Ireland
  • Evidence of funds for living costs at the level published by immigration authorities
  • A clear account of your study intention and plans after the course
  • A demonstrated obligation to return, for short-stay visitors

  • AVATS summary sheet, signed and dated
  • Passport and previous passports covering recent travel history
  • Letter of acceptance and fee payment receipt
  • Private medical insurance policy documents
  • Six months of personal bank statements, plus sponsor statements where relevant
  • Academic transcripts, certificates and English language evidence
  • Written explanation of study choice and career intention
  • Two passport-standard photographs to Irish specification

    Three to eight weeks, including institution application and acceptance.

    Fee payment and insurance

    One to three weeks; both must be settled before the visa bundle is lodged.

    AVATS submission

    Completed online, then printed and submitted with the supporting bundle.

    Decision

    Typically four to twelve weeks, with seasonal peaks around September intakes.

    Arrival and registration

    Register with immigration after arrival to obtain your IRP card.
