UK visas: study, business founders and visitor routes

UK applications are points-based and evidence-driven. We build files that satisfy the Immigration Rules and the credibility test, from CAS-backed student applications to endorsed founder routes.

Route overview

The UK operates a points-based system. Rather than a discretionary assessment, each route awards points for defined, evidenced attributes — a valid Certificate of Acceptance for Studies, an endorsement from an approved body, English at the required CEFR level, and maintenance funds held for the required period.

Alongside the points, UK caseworkers apply a credibility assessment. A file can meet every documentary requirement and still be refused if the intention, course choice or business plan does not withstand scrutiny.

Most applications are submitted online, followed by biometrics at a visa application centre and, for some student applicants, a short credibility interview.

Who this route is for

  • Students holding an unconditional offer and CAS from a licensed sponsor
  • Founders with an innovative, viable and scalable business idea
  • Professionals visiting for meetings, conferences or training
  • Family members visiting relatives settled in the UK
  • Applicants who can evidence English at the level their route requires

Eligibility requirements

  • A route-specific sponsor or endorsing body: a licensed education sponsor or an approved endorsing body
  • English language evidence at the CEFR level set for the route, usually through an approved SELT
  • Maintenance funds held in a qualifying account for the consecutive period specified in the rules
  • A genuine intention consistent with the route applied for
  • Tuberculosis test certificate from an approved clinic where required for your country of residence
  • Payment of the Immigration Health Surcharge where the route requires it

Eligibility criteria change. Final eligibility always depends on the official rules in force on your filing date and on an individual review of your case by the deciding authority.

Required documents

  • Current passport and any previous passports showing travel history
  • CAS reference number or endorsement letter, as applicable
  • Approved English language test certificate
  • Bank statements or an official financial sponsorship letter
  • Academic qualifications listed on the CAS
  • Tuberculosis clearance certificate
  • Business plan and supporting evidence for founder applications
  • Certified English translations of any non-English document

Processing timeline

  1. 1

    Route and eligibility check

One week to confirm points, funds timing and English test needs.

  2. 2

    Sponsor or endorsement

Two to twelve weeks to secure a CAS or an endorsement decision.

  3. 3

    Funds maturity

Funds must be held for the consecutive period specified in the rules before filing.

  4. 4

    Online application and biometrics

One to three weeks, depending on visa application centre capacity.

  5. 5

    Decision

Commonly three to eight weeks from biometrics; priority services may shorten this.

Common mistakes and refusal reasons

  • Filing before the maintenance funds have been held for the full qualifying period
  • Bank statements missing a name, account number, balance or statement date
  • Choosing a course inconsistent with prior study or work, without an explanation
  • Weak or rehearsed answers at the credibility interview
  • Assuming any English test is accepted — only approved SELT providers count
  • Presenting a founder business plan that is not genuinely innovative or scalable
