Which nursing qualifications are accepted?

Recognition is decided case by case against German standards. Qualifications such as ANM, GNM, Post-Basic BSc and BSc Nursing are examples that candidates commonly hold, and each must be individually verified by the competent authority — none of them is automatically accepted or automatically rejected.

What German level do I need?

B1 is commonly treated as the working minimum for patient contact and B2 is frequently required for full recognition, but the binding level is set by the federal state and the employer. We confirm it for your specific target before you book an exam.

Can I start working before recognition is complete?

In many cases yes, in an assistant role under a recognition-pending arrangement, provided the employer and authority support it. The scope of practice is limited until recognition is granted.

What is the Kenntnisprüfung?

A knowledge examination used where the authority finds substantial differences between your training and German training. The alternative is often a supervised adaptation period. Which applies depends on the deficit identified.

Can you guarantee recognition?

Nursing is a regulated profession in Germany. Employment depends on professional recognition (Anerkennung) by the competent state authority and on German language ability, not on a job offer alone.

Route overview

For nurses, Germany is a two-track process. One track is immigration — a work visa and residence title. The other is professional: your foreign nursing qualification must be assessed by the recognition authority of the German federal state where you will work, and compared with the German Pflegefachfrau/Pflegefachmann standard.

Recognition may be granted in full, or granted only after an adaptation period (Anpassungslehrgang) or a knowledge examination (Kenntnisprüfung). Until recognition is complete, many candidates work in an assistant capacity under a recognition-pending arrangement with an employer that supports the process.

German language ability is not optional in patient-facing care. Employers and authorities commonly expect B1 as a working minimum and B2 for full recognition in many states, with the exact requirement set at state level.

ANM / Auxiliary Nurse Midwife

Frequently assessed as a partial match to German training. Additional qualification steps are common and must be confirmed by the authority.

GNM / General Nursing and Midwifery

Often the basis of a recognition application, with the outcome depending on curriculum hours and clinical placements evidenced.

BSc / Post-Basic BSc Nursing

Typically the strongest documentary starting point, though full recognition still depends on the state comparison and language level.
