An applicant in India reviewing German vocational-training contract and certificate documents at a desk

Quick answer

Ausbildung is Germany's vocational-training system, and international applicants can apply when they meet the requirements of the specific occupation, training provider and immigration route. Dual training combines paid work in a company with vocational school and generally takes around two to three years. For non-EU applicants German ability is normally essential, and the official German government portal indicates at least B1 for vocational training. For applicants in India the process means finding a training place, preparing the listed documents, meeting the language and financial requirements for the route, and applying for the national visa — submitting documents does not guarantee a visa.

What is Ausbildung in Germany?

Ausbildung is Germany's vocational-training system. In a typical dual programme the trainee spends part of the training inside a company and part at a vocational school, finishing with a recognised occupational qualification.

That makes Ausbildung different from a conventional university degree. It combines:

  • practical workplace training
  • vocational-school education
  • a final vocational qualification

Official German information states that dual vocational training generally lasts around two to three years, although the duration depends on the occupation, and school-based vocational programmes follow different structures and timelines. Germany lists hundreds of recognised dual training occupations across healthcare, logistics, electronics and metal, construction, hospitality, retail and other sectors (Make it in Germany — vocational training).

If you are still comparing routes, our Germany programmes overview and the Germany country guide set Ausbildung next to study, nursing and the Opportunity Card.

Who is Ausbildung suitable for?

Ausbildung can be relevant for applicants who want a practical professional qualification rather than an academic pathway. Applicants often consider it after Class 12, a diploma, another vocational qualification, a university degree, or several years of work experience.

There is no single academic profile that guarantees admission. For dual vocational training, German law does not generally prescribe one specific school-leaving qualification — the individual training company decides what it requires, and competitive or demanding occupations may expect more (Make it in Germany — requirements).

So "I completed Class 12, therefore I automatically qualify for Ausbildung" is not a safe assumption. The occupation, the employer, the vocational school, your German level and the immigration conditions all matter.

Who may not be a good fit?

It may be worth comparing Ausbildung with university study or another route when:

  • you are not prepared to learn German;
  • the occupation does not fit your education or interests;
  • the employer's requirements are not met;
  • your expected training remuneration would not cover the financial requirements applicable to your case;
  • the programme you are considering is school-based rather than dual, which changes the financial structure;
  • you are applying mainly because someone promised a "guaranteed Germany job" or "guaranteed visa".

We treat route selection as a profile-matching exercise, not a product. If you want that done for your own profile, start with the Germany route finder.

What are the eligibility requirements?

There is no universal checklist that applies identically to every Ausbildung occupation. Requirements are shaped by the occupation, whether the programme is dual or school-based, the training company or school, your education, your German level, the immigration route, your finances and the documents the responsible authorities ask for.

RequirementWhat applicants should understand
EducationDepends on the occupation and the training provider
GermanGenerally essential; B1 is the usual guideline for vocational training
Training placeA training contract or school place is normally needed for the direct route
DocumentsPassport, education records, contract/training plan and route-specific documents
Financial proofDepends on the training type and whether the remuneration is sufficient
VisaNon-EU applicants normally need the appropriate national visa
Health insuranceRequired for residence in Germany
RecognitionMay apply depending on the training type and the employer or authority

The official German government portal describes German as indispensable for vocational training and says applicants should generally be able to demonstrate at least B1, because the workplace, the vocational school and the examinations are conducted in German (Make it in Germany — requirements).

Do Indian applicants need German for Ausbildung?

In most cases, yes. For a visa to take up vocational training, B1 is normally required where the training institution has not already assessed sufficient language ability or the applicant has not completed an applicable preparatory course (Make it in Germany — visa for vocational training). The German Missions in India likewise list German-language evidence of at least B1 among the documents for the vocational-training visa, noting that alternative evidence may apply in specific circumstances (German Missions in India).

German is not only a visa formality. You need it to follow instructions at work, understand vocational-school classes, pass examinations, manage daily life, and communicate with customers or patients in occupations where interaction is central.

Is B2 necessary for every Ausbildung?

No. B1 is the general benchmark in the official vocational-training guidance, but the level that makes a particular programme realistically manageable can be higher — healthcare roles, customer-facing work and language-intensive occupations are the usual examples. Distinguish the minimum immigration guidance from the level you actually need to succeed. Our German language academy builds towards the level your chosen route requires.

What education do I need?

For dual vocational training, German law does not generally require one specific school-leaving qualification; the training company decides which qualifications it wants. Some companies accept a lower school-leaving qualification, others ask for an intermediate or higher one, particularly for competitive occupations. For school-based vocational training the rules can differ, and official recognition of your school-leaving qualification may be required depending on the profession (Make it in Germany — requirements).

So the useful question is not "do Indians need 12th for Ausbildung?" but "does my education meet the requirements of the specific Ausbildung I am applying for?"

Can graduates apply?

A university degree does not prevent you from pursuing vocational training. The relevant question is whether you meet the requirements of the specific programme and employer. A degree on its own does not guarantee an Ausbildung place either.

Can I do Ausbildung after Class 12 in India?

Possibly, depending on the occupation and the training provider. In practice the preparation sequence is: existing education → identify a suitable occupation → check employer requirements → build German → prepare documents → apply for training places.

What documents are commonly needed?

For the vocational-training visa, the German Missions in India list documents including a valid passport, biometric photographs, a motivation letter, the signed training contract where applicable, a training plan, a CV, academic or school-leaving certificates, German-language evidence, health-insurance evidence and financial evidence where required. The mission can request additional documents or verification of certificates (German Missions in India).

A practical preparation checklist:

  • Identity: passport, copies, biometric photographs
  • Education: school-leaving certificate, academic certificates, transcripts
  • Training: Ausbildungsvertrag (training contract), Ausbildungsplan where applicable
  • Language: recognised German certificate, or other accepted evidence
  • Application: CV, motivation letter, visa application materials
  • Insurance: appropriate health-insurance evidence
  • Finance: proof of sufficient funds where required
  • Other: certified translations and anything the responsible mission requests

How much does Ausbildung cost?

There is no single total that applies to every applicant. Separate at least four categories.

1. Official visa fee

The German Missions in India list the national-visa fee as €75 for applicants over 18 (₹8,400) and €37.50 for applicants under 18, payable in Indian rupees at the applicable exchange rate, with an additional service fee charged by the external service provider (German Missions in India — National Visa).

2. Training remuneration

In dual vocational training the company pays a monthly training allowance. The official German portal states that trainees receive at least €724 per month in the first year in 2026, with the actual amount varying by occupation, training year and company (Make it in Germany — visa for vocational training). This is a stated minimum reference, not a universal Ausbildung salary.

3. Financial proof for the visa

For company-based (dual) training, the remuneration itself can count towards proof of livelihood: as of 2026, livelihood is considered secure where the training allowance reaches at least €1,048 gross or €822 net per month, and any shortfall can be covered through accepted means such as a blocked account or a declaration of commitment. For school-based vocational training the calculation differs — the applicant must generally have at least €959 net per month available as of 2026 (Make it in Germany — visa for vocational training).

These are current official 2026 figures and can change. Verify them again before filing.

4. Personal preparation costs

Language training, examination fees, translations, document verification, travel, insurance, accommodation deposits and local transport are separate from any "Ausbildung fee" and vary by candidate.

Do I always need a blocked account?

No. A blocked account is not automatically required in every company-based Ausbildung case. The question is whether the training remuneration and other accepted evidence sufficiently demonstrate that your living costs are covered; additional financial evidence is used where the remuneration does not reach the applicable amount (Make it in Germany — visa for vocational training).

What is the Ausbildung visa process for an Indian applicant?

  1. Choose a realistic occupation that matches your education, interests, language level and the actual employer requirements.
  2. Prepare German towards the level the occupation and visa route require.
  3. Apply for Ausbildung places with suitable employers or training institutions.
  4. Obtain the required training documentation — for company-based training, a binding training agreement.
  5. Prepare the visa file: passport, education records, language certificate, training contract, CV, motivation letter, financial evidence, insurance and other required documents.
  6. Apply for the appropriate national visa. Vocational-training applicants in India are currently directed to the Consular Services Portal (German Missions in India).
  7. Wait for the decision. Submitting documents does not guarantee that a visa will be granted — the mission states this explicitly.
  8. Travel and complete the formalities in Germany, including registration and the applicable residence permit.

Use the German mission responsible for your place of residence in India rather than assuming every applicant uses the same consular office.

What if I don't have an Ausbildung contract yet?

There is a separate route for entering Germany to search for a training place. Its stated requirements currently include a school-leaving certificate giving access to higher education (or a qualification from a German school abroad), German at B1, age under 35, and proof of sufficient financial means — currently at least €1,091 per month in 2026 through accepted evidence. The search period can be up to nine months, during which the holder may work up to 20 hours per week and undertake up to two weeks of trial work (Make it in Germany — visa for vocational training).

This is not the same route as entering Germany with an Ausbildung place already secured. Do not mix the two categories.

How long does the process take?

There is no single guaranteed timeline. The stages are separate: language preparation, training-place search, interviews, contract, document preparation, visa application and visa processing. The training itself generally lasts around two to three years for dual programmes, depending on the occupation. Processing times and appointment arrangements are determined by the responsible German mission, so treat any consultant's "X weeks guaranteed" claim with caution.

How do I find Ausbildung programmes?

Germany's official "Make it in Germany" portal lists vocational-training opportunities and explains how to search, with profiles across healthcare, logistics, electronics and metal, construction, hospitality, retail, medical technology and other skilled occupations (Make it in Germany — vocational training). Choose the occupation that fits your profile rather than the one that appears most often in advertisements.

Common mistakes Indian applicants make

  1. Treating Ausbildung as "free university" — it is vocational training, not a degree programme.
  2. Starting the application before preparing German.
  3. Assuming every Ausbildung has the same requirements.
  4. Assuming a blocked account is always mandatory.
  5. Submitting inconsistent documents — names, dates, education history and contracts should tell one coherent story.
  6. Believing "guaranteed visa" claims. No consultancy can guarantee an authority's decision, and the German Missions in India state that submitting documents does not guarantee issuance.
  7. Choosing an occupation only because someone says it pays well.

What to prepare before applying

  1. Profile: age, education, experience, interests, language level.
  2. Occupation: shortlist several realistic options instead of applying randomly.
  3. German: build towards the relevant level.
  4. Documents: start education and identity documents early.
  5. Applications: apply to appropriate employers or training institutions.
  6. Contract: read the actual terms of the training agreement carefully.
  7. Financial planning: understand your expected remuneration and whether additional evidence is needed.
  8. Visa: use the current official information from the mission responsible for your residence.

Important: rules can change

German immigration, visa, financial and vocational-training requirements change. The figures in this guide are based on official sources available at the review date and should be checked again before an application is filed — in particular visa requirements, financial thresholds, language evidence, documentation, consular procedures, training-place requirements and occupation-specific rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ausbildung free in Germany?
There is no universal “free Ausbildung” rule. In dual training you normally receive a training allowance from the company, but language preparation, travel, documents and living costs can still apply, and school-based training has a different financial structure.
What German level is required for Ausbildung?
B1 is the general level referenced in the official German vocational-training guidance, although the actual expectation can depend on the occupation, the training provider and your circumstances.
Can I do Ausbildung after Class 12 in India?
Possibly. For dual training the employer decides its own qualification requirements, so the specific occupation and training company matter more than a single rule.
Can graduates do Ausbildung?
A degree does not automatically prevent you from applying. The relevant question is whether you meet the requirements of the chosen training programme and employer.
Do I need a blocked account for Ausbildung?
Not necessarily. For company-based training the remuneration can contribute to proof of livelihood, and additional funds may only be needed if the remuneration does not reach the applicable amount.
How much do Ausbildung trainees earn?
There is no single Ausbildung salary. The official German portal states that trainees in dual vocational training earn at least €724 per month in the first year in 2026, while actual remuneration varies by occupation, training year and employer.
How much does Ausbildung cost in Germany?
Costs separate into the national-visa fee (€75 for applicants over 18 in India, plus a service-provider fee), any financial proof required for your route, and personal preparation costs such as language training, translations and travel.
Is there an age limit for Ausbildung?
There is no single universal age limit for every direct vocational-training programme. The separate visa for searching for a training place currently has an age limit of under 35 — do not confuse it with the visa for applicants who already hold a training place.
Can I apply for Ausbildung without a contract?
There is a separate training-place-search route under specific conditions, including B1 German, an applicable school qualification, age under 35 and proof of funds (currently at least €1,091 per month in 2026).
How do I get an Ausbildung visa from India?
In outline: secure a training place, prepare the documents the mission lists, meet the language and financial requirements for your route, and apply for the national visa through the Consular Services Portal at the German mission responsible for your place of residence.
Is the Ausbildung visa guaranteed after I receive a contract?
No. A training contract is an important part of the process, but issuance remains the decision of the competent authority, and the German Missions in India state that submitting documents does not guarantee a visa.
How long does Ausbildung take?
Dual vocational training generally takes around two to three years, and overall vocational-training durations can range to around three and a half years depending on the programme.
Can I work while doing Ausbildung?
The rules allow holders of the relevant residence permit for vocational training to take a second job for up to 20 hours per week under the applicable conditions.
Can Ausbildung lead to a career in Germany?
Completing vocational training can open further employment opportunities, and the official portal notes that many graduates are subsequently employed by their training company — but future residence and employment outcomes depend on individual circumstances and the rules in force at the time.
